The story so far...
About this blog
My Working Life has been created for a very specific reason.
In my career so far, I have hugely benefited from a wealth of advice though mentors, coaches and colleagues. I was able to navigate my way up the career ladder, with hard work of course, but also because I had met the right people at the right time. Technical skills and expertise only took me part of the way. To achieve greater things required working on soft skills and mindset.
So I thought... What if I hadn't had these encounters? Would I have been able to progress successfully?
Probably. But it would have take much longer...
This is where the blog came from.
It's here to fill in the gaps for you, WORKING PROFESSIONAL with big AMBITIONS and eager to LEARN the soft skills and mindset required to progress.
My Working Life brings you advice through 3 lenses:
- Career success -
- Management success -
- Personal success -
Hi, I'm Cedric Boue!
The journey to My Working Life was long and tumultuous.
See, when I moved to the UK in 2011 to be with my soon-to-be wife Katie (I'm originally from the south of France), I had a very hard time finding a "proper" job. I was lucky enough to have advanced education (MSc level), but that didn't matter. The job market was in standstill. We were young and had limited expenses but nevertheless needed money to make ends meet. So I worked in hospitality for a while, mainly as a barista making coffees, but other jobs too, and topped up my income by working as a cleaner in a London hostel.
Life wasn't bad. We had a good time, made great friends, partied a lot. But something was missing...
I didn't want a "job". I wanted a career.
Something to be excited about. Motivated. Ambitious.
From that point on, it's like a fire lit up in my belly: I was going to work hard to get that career.
I started networking, studying on the side, carried on going to countless interviews, until I found an entry level role. I sticked to it, and worked hard to progress from the inside. Got additional qualifications on the way, learned new skills. And carried on learning.
It's all about learning, discovering, growing...
And this is where I am today.
I am a family man...
First and foremost, happily married to Katie, dad to 3-year old Emilie and expecting another child in the summer of 2020. Having a family has made me understand what really mattered in live, and is the core of my ambition to achieve great things.
I am a chartered accountant...
I've always loved numbers. I knew in my teens that a career in Finance made sense (not realising how much it would open doors back then!). I have a MSc in Market Finance from the Toulouse School of Management (France) and qualified as a Chartered Management Accountant (ACMA) in the UK.
I am a manager...
I'm a people person. I love seeing others grow, rise up to the challenge and support them along the way. Being a manager is extremely rewarding and has taught me so much about myself. I'm currently leading a top Finance team for an international law firm.
I am a lifelong learner...
One thing I value more than anything else is approaching life with an open mind, and learning is at the centre of everything I do. I am learning to become a better husband, father, professional and manager. Amongst other things. I am also learning new mindsets, ways to approach life, understand why some things matter and other don't. I am learning how to become a better human being.
Learning never stops. Do you agree? Then you're in the right place...
About the future
I have plenty to share with you, but I also have plenty to learn.
I have big goals in my life and my career, and I will share my learnings through My Working Life along the way.
But I'm not the only one. The power of learning is compounded through community, and I expect My Working Life to become that community one day.
As I'm launching MWL in July 2020, I already have a few ideas of how it could develop into something more, a real learning platform, a shortcut to professional success and a close-knit group of high-performing ambitious professionals.
Stay tuned for more, and don't forget to join the MWL mailing list!
